Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When she set off to cross the Atlantic as part of a delivery crew, Jill Dickin Schinas had no idea that she was embarking on a whole new life, but within a week of setting out she and the skipper were making plans for a journey to Cape Horn. One year later the couple were on their way but had detoured up the Amazon to get married. Two years after that they were crossing the Atlantic again, this time from the Caribbean and this time with the ship's company enlarged by the addition of a two year old son and a babe in arms. Together the little family then headed directly for the Falkland Islands and the southern tip of South America - travelling via the Bahamas, the Azores, Portugal, the Canaries, Cape Verde, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Sao Tome and Principe, Uruguay, Argentina, and various tenanted and untenanted islets and lumps of rock cast adrift in the Atlantic Ocean. Seven years after setting out, they almost reached their destination... On the face of it, this book is a travelogue, but it is also a portrait of the cruising lifestyle- the hand-to-mouth, alternative lifestyle, not the early-retirement luxury cruise. Yes, we were bound for Cape Horn... in as much as we had a destination, this indeed was it. But we were in no great hurry, and even this goal was viewed as little more than a staging post on our journey, for we meant to journey indefinitely. Truly, it was not a place but a lifestyle which we were setting forth to find. The family's adventures range from fighting gales and battling with immigration officials, to exploring uncharted African waters and abandoning ship to board a chopper via the winch cable. There is much in here that will beof value to other yachtsmen and other travellers, and heaps which will appeal to armchair voyagers and to families seeking to turn away from the nine-to-five motorway and tread a road of their own. Contains 31 pen-and-ink drawings and cartoons. Includes a brief glossary for people not conversant with sailing terminology. By the author of Kids in the Cockpit (a guide to sailing and cruising with children). The Schinas family are talented people. Theres nothing on the planet that Nick cant fix, while Jill is an artist of character. The children are developing in the same mould, but the overriding feature of all their lives and the guiding spirit of this book, is their self-sufficiency and courage to make their own choices, come fair weather or foul. Casting fate to the ocean winds without visible means of support in the third millennium demands a lot more guts than ever it did thirty years ago. Keeping going, despite producing three fine children and surviving a capsize off the Falklands that ended on the winch cable of an RAF helicopter, shows the true spirit of seafaring. TOM CUNLIFFE

Book excerpt: This volume analyses the role of Bram Stoker’s Dracula and its sequels in the evolution of the Gothic. As well as the transformation of the Gothic location—from castles, cemeteries and churches to the modern urban gothic—this volume explores the evolution of the undead considering a range of media from the 19th century protagonist to sympathetic contemporary vampires of teen Gothic. Based on an interdisciplinary approach (literature, tourism, and film), the book argues that the development of the Dracula myth is the result of complex international influences and cultural interactions. Offering a multifarious perspective, this volume is a reference work that will be useful to both academic and general readers.

Book excerpt: This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Owen Wister (1860-1938) was an American writer and "father" of western fiction. When he started writing, he naturally inclined towards fiction set on the western frontier. Wister's most famous work remains the novel The Virginian, set in the Wild West. It describes the life of a cowboy who is a natural aristocrat, set against a highly mythologized version of the Johnson County War and taking the side of the large land owners. The Virginian paved the way for many more westerns by such authors as Zane Grey, Louis L'Amour, and several others. It is also widely regarded as being the first cowboy novel. Book excerpt: DescriptionEveryone is to some degree their own schizophrenic. Brendan feels it is his job in life as a committed schizophrenic to pass on his experiences in coping with this 'disease'. Brendan feels he has a lot to offer his readers because of his success in dealing with life's problems. This book is a mixture of autobiography and fantasy. Basically a 'send up' of UK psychiatry, Roman Catholicism and the mixed up world of human relationships that we all inhabit. The many characters appear under one name in one section but will then appear in another section as someone slightly different. Brendan deals with his characters in this way in order to present them as characters in their own right but also as fragments of his own self. Despite the serious subject matter of this book, there is much laughter. The book is an emotional roller-coaster, leaving the reader not knowing whether to be sad or happy - but always laughing.About the Author Brendan Reason is 54 and lives alone in Ipswich. Brendan has suffered from a form of schizophrenia since 1976 but has never let this prevent him from living life to the full. Since 1987 he has worked as a volunteer at the Ipswich Disabled Advice Bureau - giving advice and help to people who are disabled. He also regularly sings and plays guitar at the Bureau's AGM. Brendan has an Honours degree in Social Administration and a post-graduate certificate in Education. Brendan believes he was much happier as a student than he is in the world of work and because of his mental health problems the longest he has held down a paid job is two and a half years.Brendan has always written poetry and prose and, in the mid nineties, a small but well regarded publisher called 'Envoi Poets' published a book of his poetry called 'Fragments of Eve and Other Poetry'. Another of his creative interests has been amateur dramatics both as a budding actor and script writer. In 1987 The Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich performed several of Brendan's scenes and sketches in a lunchtime performance given over to local writing talent. Brendan says that he ""feels privileged that life has given me something to write about and that means so much to me.""

Today, tough, pink-haired Max and her little brother, Carter, are stuck in modern-day Hamelin with their father . . . until they are also led away by the Piper to a place called the Summer Isle. There they meet the original stolen children, who haven’t aged a day and who have formed their own town, vigilantly guarded from the many nightmarish beings that roam the land. No one knows why the Piper stole them, but Max and Carter may be the key to returning the lost children of Hamelin. Together they set out on the Peddler’s Road to find their way back to the real world. This swashbuckling journey is perfect for fans of Rump and A Tale Dark and Grimm.
