Book excerpt: This book is for the reader who takes interest in an age-old issue that remains contemporary with every succeeding generation. When, how, and why we are here are questions that have caused countless generations of thinkers and laymen alike to intuitively seek at the very least the semblance of an answer to questions that have become more of an outlook than a science, and in turn spring up among the problems of modern life as opposed to allowing for a resolution to that which was intended to clarify instead of further complicate. Free from the shackles and bias imposed by the various schools of religious, scientific and philosophical thought, the examinations offered herein are rooted in systematic analyses of the scientific, philosophical, ethical, social and finally the religious; which in turn allows for the explanation and justification of concepts that enable the reader to adopt a perspective relevant to the distinctions of absolute truth and relativistic assumptions. Our age is accurately referred to as the age of advancement and technology and for good reason. The rapid pace of progression over the last century in the life sciences has contributed to a broadened understanding of knowledge itself and its relation to the psychological and sociological aspects of our existence. As a result of the significant expansion of the sciences, the desire for an understanding of self and simply of why has in many ways been diluted, thus negating the never ending questions that once tugged at man's conscious in the middle of the night for thousands of years. Today's amazing achievements have laid the foundation for a whole series of newer problems and questions that threaten mankind as never before. The medical and biological sciences have enabled us to have a life expectancy beyond that of prior generations, however coupled with that are the problems of population explosion, which in the not too distant future will give rise to serious concerns. We have the ability to harness the power of the atom, yet along with it comes the ability to destroy all that we hold sacred. Taking into consideration the advanced age we live in, how does one account for the remarkable complexity extant throughout the known universe? Is one to assume that our consciousness coupled with our overwhelming sense of purpose can be attributed solely to random chance alone? The law of causation deals with the need for a preceding event leading to the outcome, and despite the fact that this scientific age has left its handprint on every facet of life today, it has failed to satisfy the innate question of simply,.................................. why?

Book excerpt: What happens to us when the line goes flat? Cardiologists can tell us what happens to the heart at death. Neurologists have extensive knowledge about what occurs in the brain and central nervous system at the moment we die. But what happens to our consciousness? There is much evidence that awareness continues. The Bible tells us exactly what happens when we die. As you read this book you will discover the amazing equipoise of death-the delicate equilibrium between the ‘not yet’ and ‘now’ of the new body and the new spirit-soul. For the person in Christ death is not a passage into gloom and uncertainty, but is like arriving at the crest of a great mountain after a long climb through whirling storms and tearing winds, and basking in the brilliant radiance at the top. The mere existence of bios-life locked inside a deteriorating, decaying body is released into the purity of being which is the Zoe-Life Adam and Eve knew before the fall into sin and death, and won back for us by Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself on the cross and His amazing resurrection. If you are fearful of death, or still feeling sting of bereavement, or desiring to give comfort and hope to others who have experienced loss, this book will be a source of assurance, comfort, hope, and peace as in page after page it brings together the profound truths of Scripture and takes you on an exhilarating exploration of their rich detail. * Are we disembodied spirits floating in heavenly space, or do we receive the new body immediately upon dying? * How does the human psyche function in Heaven? * What is the nature of our new minds, souls, and wills in Heaven? * Whom will we see and know on our first step in Heaven? * What about those we don’t see? Will we grieve for them? And if so, how can Heaven be a place of no tears and weeping? * Just how ‘special’ is the place ‘prepared for you’?

Book excerpt: "'What in the World is God Doing?' asks Vinson Synan. Evil has swept the earth in the twentieth century-the bloodiest in human history. Yet this century has also seen an astounding outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Writing with both a historian's perspective and prophetic urgency, Synan helps us understand our times. Today, God is giving great gifts in times of great trouble. In the Latter Days, describes the Pentecostal outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the twentieth century. It is the greatest revival in human history. It has touched millions of lives, reached across denominational barriers, restored spiritual gifts to Christian life, and permanently reshaped Christianity. The Pentecostal movement began humbly in a Kansas farmhouse and a shabby Los Angeles meeting hall. It spread rapidly throughout the U.S., spawning several new fast-growing denominations, and within a few decades had taken hold in every continent. Then, in the 1960s, even Pentecostal Christians were amazed when a neo-Pentecostal movement erupted in the mainline Protestant denominations and the charismatic renewal unexpectedly appeared in the Catholic Church. In the Latter Days tells the whole dramatic story of God's Pentecostal working our day--a day of great evil and--a day of great blessing."--Publisher's information.

Book excerpt: Numerous books and pamphlets have been written on what the author calls the American theme. However, many of these publications are nothing more than a synopsis of American tragedy and government corruption. This book “has a larger, more ideal ambition,” says the author. “In the truest sense, America in Perspective is not as much a book about what’s wrong with America as it is a book about what’s right (or will be right) with America.” America in Perspective is a catchy book, different than the masses. The author writes of America’s past, present and future as seen through a religious perspective. Though primarily LDS (Latter-day Saint or Mormon) oriented, America in Perspective can inspire anyyone who has even an inkling of American patriotism. With numerous quotes from scripture, past and present religious authorities, political leaders and other sources, America in Perspective is a classy book that fills a contemporary need.

The general editor for this enterprising series is Clinton E. Arnold The following focused sections help readers understand the text: Literary Context: Explains how each passage functions within the book Main Idea: Summarizes the central message of the passage Translation in Graphic Layout: Presents a translation through a diagram that helps readers visualize the flow of thought within the text Exegetical Outline: Gives the overall structure of the passage Explanation of the Text: Provides interpretive insights into the background and meaning of the text Theology in Application: Discusses how the message of the text fits within the book itself and in a broader biblical-theological context, suggesting applications for the church today

Book excerpt: There are worldwide concerns that the planet is on the brink of extinction, but just how close are we to the end? Is there a prophetic significance of Brexit for example? What about climate change? Since the earth was created thousands of years ago, why was there no concern of a global extinction before now? What is it about now, that worries climatologists and meteorologists, and for that matter, epidemiologists, and virologists? Is there a prophetic significance in the timing of the Covid19 pandemic, or the rise in global social unrests like BLM? Did the Bible prophets foresee the rise of Silicon Valley, the explosion of Artificial Intelligence or the break-neck speed in information technology? If so, what is their prophetic utility in decoding the timetable for the end? How does the combination of science and eschatology help us to appreciate our proximity to the brink? This shocking revelation answers the question, ‘Is God Still Coming?’

Book excerpt: Winner of the Best Anthology Award from John Whitmer Historical Association Latter-day Saints have a paradoxical relationship to the past; even as they invest their own history with sacred meaning, celebrating the restoration of ancient truths and the fulfillment of biblical prophecies, they repudiate the eighteen centuries of Christianity that preceded the founding of their church as apostate distortions of the truth. Since the early days of Mormonism, Latter-day Saints have used the paradigm of apostasy and restoration in their narratives about the origin of their church. This has generated a powerful and enduring binary of categorization that has profoundly impacted Mormon self-perception and relations with others. Standing Apart explores how the idea of apostasy has functioned as a category to mark, define, and set apart "the other" in Mormon historical consciousness and in the construction of Mormon narrative identity. The volume's fifteen contributors trace the development of LDS narratives of apostasy within the context of both Mormon history and American Protestant historiography. They suggest ways in which these narratives might be reformulated to engage with the past, as well as offering new models for interfaith relations. This volume provides a novel approach for understanding and resolving some of the challenges faced by the LDS church in the twenty-first century.
