Book excerpt: In Eye of the Beholder, the author takes us on a journey from the rural life of horse-drawn carriages to a technological age of jet planes and rockets to the moon. Ephraim J. Stockwell wrote his first poem in his teens when he left home. He left home, but his heart remained there with his family, friends, and neighbors. He has written poetry over the years that is simple, touching, and unique. Love of life, love of home, and love of country has influenced much of it. The author is a World War II veteran. After college, having majored in Physics, opportunities in his career led to an important role in putting a man on the moon at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a spiritual solution to a human condition. Every problem and every solution stem from a mental and personal definition. A definition is what we create to interpret every situation in life. Then we use those interpretations to create new definitions. The catch is learning how to change those definitions at a subconscious level to help us achieve the things that we value. If first, you don't succeed then redefine success. This book simplifies many complexities of quantum physics and psychology. Once this information is processed and understood, it is then used to show its connection and similarities between a myriad of universal spiritual practices and principles. This connection is done in a way that has never been done before. Similar to a documentary on paper, it proposes easy to understand explanations of how the many things that we call reality, are just fragments of the mind. Things that we intuitively know but are never taught, gain more validation with each chapter by the breakdown and application of different things in our everyday lives. My love and hunger for this subject matter have led me to research 1000s of hours in this truth-seeking journey. I am a certified hypnotherapist and very experienced in the arts of meditation. I am a member of the Greens political party and the practising manager of a stem cell and cancer clinic. I am a Master Mason, thus my esoteric understandings of the world stem from my Freemason affiliation and they have given me a view most people have not properly investigated. I have also experienced the extreme lows of drug addiction, the criminal world and domestic abuse, only to come out of the tunnel with a better understanding of the dark before appreciating the light. My open mind and experiences, have led me to help science and spirituality communicate in the way that it was always intended, but frowned upon. Reality is not easy to navigate through, but it is impossible if you don't even know who you are.

Book excerpt: A collection of the very best in contemporary first-person journalism compiled by the award-winning former Washington Post reporter and author. Great journalists, at one time or another, have all been characters in their own stories: people with personalities that shaped what they saw and reported, and were touched and changed by the experiences about which they wrote; and innovators who borrowed the storytelling techniques of fiction. The Beholder’s Eye showcases the very best of an increasing trend toward personal narrative: Mike Sager stalking Marlon Brando in the Tahitian jungle; J. R. Moehringer’s quest to discover the true identity of an old boxer; Bill Plaschke’s story about a woman with cerebral palsy who runs an obscure Los Angeles Dodgers Web site; Scott Anderson’s story of his lifetime of covering war after war; Harrington’s own tale of his interracial family’s struggle to persevere; and many others. Written by reporters who were willing to reveal themselves in order to bring readers insights that were deeper than supposedly objective third-person stories, their articles are an invaluable resource for aspiring journalists, students, and teachers of the craft of writing, and any reader with an appreciation for masterful storytelling. “Aims to dispel the old journalistic cliché: that a journalist writing about him/herself is always ‘self-indulgent and, quite likely, narcissistic.’ He couldn’t have put together a better lineup of writers to make the point that it doesn’t have to be . . . Not just some of the country’s finest personal journalism, but some of its finest journalism, period.”—Kirkus Reviews

Apart they are six, the only existing members of their ancient race, a species with the ability to assume any form once they understand its essence. Their continued survival in a universe filled with races ready to destroy anyone perceived as different is based on the Rules. And first among those Rules is: Never reveal your true nature to another being. But when the youngest among them, Esen-alit-Quar, receives her first independent assignment to a world considered safe to explore, she stumbles into a trap no one could have anticipated. Her only means of escape lies in violating the First Rule. She reveals herself to a fellow captive―a human being/ While this mistake might not ordinarily prove fatal, the timing of the event could not be worse. For something new has finally made its way into the Universe, the Enemy of the Web, bringer of death to all forms of life. And the hunt it about to begin.

Book excerpt: This book, written to accompany an exhibition of the same title at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, in Spring 1998, will provide a non-technical introduction to the science of the human face and the psychology of face perception. The human face has many important biological roles, Eyes, ears, and mouth are the source of most of our sensory inputs, We intake air, food, and liquid through our nose and mouth; our eyes and ears are spaced to perceive distance; our jaws are built for chewing and swallowing. Socially, facesmore than any other part of the body, provide us with crucial information. A universally important locus of communication, we use our faces for speech, and to express emotions, the most widely investigated social signals. Easier to remember than names, faces are important cues for recognisingothers; we are adept at distinguising old from young, male from female, or one ethnic group from another on the basis of facial features. We use faces in identikit parades, readily identify faces from grotesque caricatures, detect family resemblances, and judege attractiveness on the basis offacial features. In fact, neurobiologists have shown that there are special areas of the brain dedicated to processing faces and that we are born imprinted with an innate understanding of facial patterns. Vicki Bruce and Andy Young explore all of these diverse aspects of the human face in their fascinating book. Each topic is illustrated using reproductions of portraits from the gallery's extensive collections, as well as state-of-the art computer-manipulated graphics. An attractive andaccessible book, this will be of interest to anyone who has ever wondered why and how faces are special, to humans generally, and to the human brain in particular.

Book excerpt: "One of the most remarkable combinations of a private-eye novel and psychological suspense story, with an entirely new slant, that has ever been published." — The New York Times Book Review At the center of this genre-bending tale of sex, death, and parental love is a private investigator known as The Eye, who has been seeking his missing daughter for many years. In the course of his search, he encounters a mysterious femme fatale who routinely attracts, robs, and murders wealthy men. The Eye knows perfectly well that this woman is not his long-lost daughter, yet he's compelled to follow her, destroying the evidence of her murders, covering her tracks, and taking an active — though silent — role in her crimes. This offbeat mystery's portrait of a pair of despondent loners presents a haunting tale of obsession. "A pivotal work in the history of mystery fiction." — The Guardian

Book excerpt: Explores the rise of the idea of nothing in Western modernity and how its figuration is transforming and offering new possibilities. In this groundbreaking, interdisciplinary history of ideas, Andrew W. Hass explores the ascendency of the concept of nothing into late modernity. He argues that the rise of the reality of nothing in religion, philosophy, and literature has taken place only against the decline of the concept of One: a shift from a sovereign understanding of the One (unity, universality) toward the “figure of the O”—a cipher figure that, as nonentity, is nevertheless determinant of other realities. The figuring of this O culminates in a proliferation of literary expressions of nothingness, void, and absence from 1940 to 1960, but by century’s end, this movement has shifted from linear progression to mutation, whereby religion, theology, philosophy, literature, and other critical modes of thought, such as feminism, merge into a shared, circular activity. The writer W. H. Auden lends his name to this O, his long poetic work The Sea and the Mirror an exemplary manifestation of its implications. Hass examines this work, along with that of a host of writers, philosophers, and theologians, to trace the revolutionary hermeneutics and creative space of the O, and to provide the reasoning of why nothing is now such a powerful force in the imagination of the twenty-first century, and of how it might move us through and beyond our turbulent times.
