Book excerpt: Daniel was serving the Babylonian Empire on October 12, 539 BCE, where a great party was underway. Belshazzar, one thousand of his nobles, and their wives were drinking wine from gold cups plundered from the temple at Jerusalem. Suddenly, the fingers of a hand wrote on the wall, “Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.” That very night, the Babylonian Empire fell to Cyrus the Great. The exiled prince, Daniel now served the Persians instead of the Babylonians. Author Sandy Miller’s Rebuilding Jerusalem examines the biblical, historical, and archaeological record of the Persian Empire’s relationship with Jewish exiles after they conquered Babylon. Through a series of twelve lectures, it follows 114 years of the Persian Empire, relaying the history of Persian kings who helped various Bible figures preserve the Promised Land for future generations. It includes stories of their unique involvement with the Persian Empire found in the Old Testament books of Daniel, Haggai, Zechariah, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther. Rebuilding Jerusalem shows that Israel is a vibrant country today, at least in part because of the ancient Persian Empire’s involvement in the restoration of the country.

Book excerpt: The collected proclamations ascribed to two little-known post-exilic prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, represent a bridge between the traditions of classical Israelite religion and the dramatic changes esential to the preservation of the fragile Restoration community. This section-by-section, verse-by-verse analysis and exposition focus on the prophetic word as addressed not only to Israel in this 'time of small beginnings' but also to the Church today. His primary concern is the theological message of the prophets, yet ever with an eye toward their historical context, literary form and cultural setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Ezra is generally known for its negative and exclusivist attitude towards the other. Others are the cause of dread in one part of the book, and in another part they are adversarial. Furthermore, Ezra commands that foreign wives and their children be sent away. Yet the book of Ezra also features an exceptional account of welcome. In Rebuilding a Post-exilic Community, Chingboi Guite Phaipi examines what drives negative attitudes toward the other, and argues that beneath the presence of different attitudes toward the other within the book of Ezra lies a coherent foundation. That is, negative attitudes toward others make sense in light of the community’s strong self-perception in the book of Ezra.

Tear down the old walls and build anew. I am ready to rebuild the walls of my life. There's no need to feel burdened or discouraged because the walls of your life have been torn down. Let us take encouragement from Nehemiah and other biblical characters, as encouragement on how to pursue not just strong walls, but God Himself, who is our fortress and deliverer. God is our stronghold, our deliverer. He is our fort, our bastion. God is our castle and our citadel. Failure is not fatal. One mistake doesn't make you a loser. You are not a mistake. A mistake is what you did not what you are. Our scars represent strength not weakness. Yes they can and they will be a great army in the name of Jesus. Your situation may look as hopeless as it did for the Assyrians but I can almost guarantee. What God has is for you. Even though your blessings may delayed I believe in my heart they your blessings won't be denied. Abundance and blessings are on the way! In Jesus Name.

It explores the reasons why the Singaporean Chinese continue to maintain ties with their ancestral village and how they reproduce Chinese culture through ancestor worship and religion in the ancestral village. In some cases, the Singaporeans feel morally obliged to assist in village reconstruction and infrastructure developments such as new roads, bridges, schools and hospitals. Others help with small-scale industrial and retail activities. Meanwhile, officials and villagers in the ancestral home utilize various strategies to encourage the Singaporeans to revisit their ancestral village, sustain heritage ties, and help enhance the moral economy. This ethnographic study examines two geographically distinct groups of Chinese coming together to re-establish their lineage and identity through cultural and economic activities

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2000, this second edition was first published in 2010. This is a discussion of the relationship between one group of Singapore Chinese and their ancestral village in Fujian in China. It explores the various reasons why the Singapore Chinese continue to want to maintain ties with their ancestral village and how they go about reproducing Chinese culture (in the form of ancestor worship and religion) in the village milieu in China. It further explores the reasons why the Singapore Chinese feel morally obliged to assist their ancestral village in village reconstruction (providing financial contributions to infrastructure development such as the buildings of roads, bridges, schools, hospitals) and to help with small scale industrial and retail activities. Related to this is how the village cadres and teenagers, through various strategies, managed to encourage the Singapore Chinese to revisit their ancestral village and help with village reconstruction, thereby creating a moral economy. The main argument here concerns the desire of the Singapore Chinese to maintain a cultural identity and lineage continuity with their ancestral home. Ethnographically, this anthropological study examines two groups of Chinese separated by historical and geographical space, and their coming together to re-establish their cultural identity through various cultural and economic activities. At the theoretical level, it seeks to add a new dimension to the study of Chinese transnationalism and diaspora studies.

Book excerpt: The book is about the pretribulational rapture theory. The book is written by a person that at one time believed the pretribulational rapture theory. The author noticed scriptural problems with the pretribulational rapture theory as time went by. The author presents a biblical view of the rapture by presenting the scriptures on the subject. At the end of each chapter, the author asks questions about the scriptures presented. In particular, the author asks questions about the scriptures that caused him to reject the pretribulational rapture theory. At the end of each chapter, there are pages for notes. The reader can write his answers to the questions. The questions are designed to make the reader think about the scriptural basis for his views. This is why the title of the book is Rapture Reality Check.
