Book excerpt: This isn't a self-help book about giving up smoking -- it's a candid, irreverent, eye-opening story about one woman's struggle to overcome her tobacco addiction. In her heartfelt memoir, Beard shares the crazy cocktails of medicine and diversion tactics she employs in her attempt to rid herself of her addiction. Having tried to quit more times than she kept count, she identifies the false assumptions and unhelpful social attitudes to reveal changes that would have a powerful impact on the success rate of quitting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Initially, I had intended to write this book in the summer of 2006. At that time, my involvement in the Life Extension Movement was growing, my enthusiasm was palpable; trusted friends and colleagues urged me to undertake the project, noting that it would give momentum to a nascent movement that was a mere blip on the political radar screen and bring needed attention to an issue that many thought might never be discussed seriously in a society that considers death an unpleasant but inevitable reality. Even though I agreed with this analysis, I managed to avoid any serious attempt to start a far-reaching debate on the political, social, and economic consequences of radically extending one’s life into the future. After all, I thought, the technology in this field is still at a nascent stage, antiaging research receives few government grants, controversy abounds in the scientific community as to the mere possibility of indefinite life extension; most elected officials are clueless about it and even a majority of the President’s Council on Bioethics is hostile to the idea. But that being said, I never was one to back down from a good fight. I had read much of the scientific work undertaken by a multitude of scientists determined to understand how and why human beings slowly age, and how we can reverse our demise and extend our lives indefinitely. I disagreed with the naysayers who pompously declare that prolonging life will ruin the environment, cause overpopulation, promote wars over scarce resources, as well as those narrow-minded, quasi—pundits who embraced a number of bogus charges and half-truths intended to impede further research into the causes of the terminal disease of aging. I had more than enough evidence to confront the critics, but for some unknown reason, I lost the internal primal spark necessary to fight back. I thought, should I enter a battle that few know about and even fewer care? Instead of hearing a clarion call to act, I became mired in skepticism, doubt and a growing resignation toward terminal apathy. ...

Book excerpt: A story of addiction and recovery, love and perseverance, and a reminder that it’s never too late to start over. Bob Ramsay had it all — and lost it all, often. At forty, he lived in a drug treatment centre in Atlanta. Starting over back in Toronto, he began dating an older woman, a doctor named Jean Marmoreo, who had three teenage kids. The chances of this relationship lasting were zero. But they married and created a very different “out there” life for themselves, climbing mountains, running marathons, and exploring the ends of the earth. Then one day Bob’s heart stopped, and life got much worse after it was restarted. But once again, perseverance and love won over fate, and today, Bob turns connection into an art form, while Jean Marmoreo is a MAiD doctor, leading her patients across the thin veil between life and death. Love or Die Trying is a love story that unfolded against all odds and a reflection on a life anchored between a first death and the future.

Book excerpt: I Never Quit Trying is a book based on courage, strength, perseverance and most importantly, love. Ruthie walks you through her journey of breast cancer from the day of diagnosis through the day she finished this book. Ruthie was subjected to an abusive childhood that led her to believe she could only depend on herself. Her breast cancer journey taught her to lean on others for support and trust that they would be there for her. And they were. With her husband at her side and her friends surrounding her, she learned to surrender and trust. Her journey takes us through her vanity, her fear, her perseverance and her survival. Her writings are honest and raw and show the emotions that accompany hair loss, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. And once it’s all over, how to move forward. You will find humor and anger, love and hatred and in the end, a true appreciation for life. Her spirituality is strong throughout her journey and there are many instances of her spirits guiding her. Ruthie also walks us through “cancer in the workplace” and how she navigated her career in commercial real estate during this time. Walking through this type of journey is hard. Knowing that others have walked the same path is comforting. She wants to spread the word to Never Quit Trying.
