Book excerpt: Internationally renowned textile designer Lori Weitzner presents a novel, layered perspective on the use and significance of color in design and culture in this spectacular treasury illustrated with 225 full-color images. Ode to Color, a stunning anthology by renowned and award-winning textile and wallcovering designer Lori Weitzner, principal of Lori Weitzner Design, Inc., offers an immersive, sensual, and engaging journey in the world of color as it applies to culture, design, mood, and memory. Each of the ten chapters in this richly illustrated volume presents a distinct color world through an intimate and often kaleidoscopic perspective, a compilation of the numerous—and often shifting—associations and emotions we assign to a color or group of colors. Each chapter combines diverse imagery—evocative fine art and photography, environmental interiors, details of Weitzner’s gorgeous designs as well as her sketches and watercolors—with excerpts from literature and her own essays on a wide array of topics relating to the palette. The result is a fully sensory conveyance of each palette’s particular power as well as a consideration of its tangible and intangible connections, from its place in religion, pop culture, and commerce to the impact it has upon our decision making, our moods, and our tastes. While each chapter is unique in its approach to the ten worlds, with its mix of essays, prose and range of art, from a Technicolor Disney cartoon in Out Loud to David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust in Silverlight, each chapter includes: An introductory essay on a subject that characterizes the palette A two-page photographer of an open drawer in Weitzner’s studio that she has arranged with various fabrics, skeins, and objects that, together, comprise the palette; An evocative two-page word collage that presents both color names and the words commonly associated with the palette; Design pointers that provide in-depth insight to working with color and to decorating with each palette throughout the home, from wall treatments to accessories. Spectacular and imaginative, this experiential volume will captivate, inspire, and inform a broad audience, including interior designers and decorators, architects, graphic and fine artists, and anyone interested in art, design, fashion, pop culture, and spiritual discovery. Sumptuous, beautifully designed, and filled with wondrous imagery and compelling stories and facts, it makes an inspiring and unusual gift for almost any occasion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main theory in this book is the fact that humans as a species have stopped evolving in-vivo. They are evolving in-caput. It means that humans by developping technology turn themselves into a never ending list of sub-species. The dynamics of in-caput evolution are modelled in Julia and described in detail in this book. All equations are described and Julia code listings are present in this book. The conclusions coming from those equations are the following: We have seen that “in caput evolution” can define the way by which the homo sapiens species operates. Defining with allometric equations, the “in caput evolution” is possible. In that case, the most plausible equation models succeed in defining the current humanity s-curve, with a time extension from -2000 CE to 6000 CE. All of a sudden, the current s-curve became visible. It is the technology that fuels this “in caput evolution” s-curve. The technology level allows us to predict the human population during the s-curve and the human lifespan. Interestingly the quarter-power law, so crucial in allometry, stay the course also in this case. If we believe in those equations, then the corresponding s-curves of the human population and technology level went through their maximum growth points during the last few decades. Therefore we have switched from growing growth to decreasing growth. Those were the years of the switch for this s-curve that can be defined as “the technarian age jump”. It is possible to plot factor population function of the technology level factor, which shows the functional response of humanity during the technarian age jump. It usually is not easy to diverge a lot from a functional response. But there are two sides to the functional response. One is the crowded side. Where there is more population and fewer resources, the other side is the smart side. They both go to the same point, but one side is the smarter and safer side. In front of factor population and factor technology level, it is possible to extend the definition of species fitness beyond simply the factor population but also the factor technology level into it. Life is a succession of s-curves reversely falling into negentropy. Before the "technarian age jump" s-curve, humanity went through the venatorian s-curve and the agrarian s-curve. Simplified models of venatorian, agrarian and technarian societies have been done to evaluate if dynamic societal movements could impact the main s-curve. But societal movements likely have only a limited impact on the overall humanity functional response. However, there has been an exciting result modelling the agrarian society. It appears that its well-documented plural centenarian instability cycle might actually be generated by elite over reproduction but also end especially by the elite loss of efficiency. The discovered allometry equations enable us to estimate that humans are right now the equivalent of a 98% material aggregation and 2% molecular aggregation. At the end of the technarian s-curve, they will be 99.5% material and 0.5% molecular. That is if nothing changes. But things will change. The new s-curve is getting started. It will be the one of The Singularity. It is unknown when and how it will play out. It is unknown if in the middle there will be a long or very long asymptotic phase, but it will be a crucially important and exciting time. Hopefully, humanity will fulfil its destiny of being a “Proteromonic” species.

So I eventually chose to write and utilize my (lifelong) study of words (etymology, linguistics and derivations, i.e., from Greek, from Latin, etc.) to where I began blending and accenting, via word spellings, into more Colorful and, say, Embellished new words, i.e., accenting words within words as a new form of word play. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Saint Gregory of Narek, a monk of the tenth century, knew how to express the sentiments of your people more than anyone. He gave voice to the cry, which became a prayer of a sinful and sorrowful humanity, oppressed by the anguish of its powerlessness, but illuminated by the splendor of God’s love and open to the hope of his salvific intervention, which is capable of transforming all things.” —Pope Francis, April 12, 2015 This is the first translation in any language of the surviving corpus of the festal works of St. Gregory of Narek, a tenth-century Armenian mystic theologian and poet par excellence (d. 1003). Composed as liturgical works for the various Dominical and related feasts, these poetic writings are literary masterpieces in both lyrical verse and narrative. Unlike Gregory’s better-known penitential prayers, these show a jubilant author in a celebratory mood. In this volume Abraham Terian, an eminent scholar of medieval Armenian literature, provides the nonspecialist reader with an illuminating translation of St. Gregory of Narek’s festal works. Introducing each composition with an explanatory note, Terian places the works under consideration in their author’s thought-world and in their tenth-century landscape.

Let us look at some examples, the history of computing the number ? began in Egypt and Babylon about 2000 years BC, since then many mathematicians have calculated ? (e. g. , Archimedes, Ptolemy, Vi` ete, etc. ). The ?rst formula for computing decimal digits of ? was disc- ered by J. Machin (in 1706), who was the ?rst to correctly compute 100 digits of ?. Then many people used his method, e. g. , W. Shanks calculated ? with 707 digits (within 15 years), although due to mistakes only the ?rst 527 were correct. For the next examples, we can mention the history of computing the ?ne-structure constant ? (that was ?rst discovered by A. Sommerfeld), and the mathematical tables, exact - lutions, and formulas, published in many mathematical textbooks, were not veri?ed rigorously [25]. These errors could have a large e?ect on results obtained by engineers. But sometimes, the solution of such problems required such techn- ogy that was not available at that time. In modern mathematics there exist computers that can perform various mathematical operations for which humans are incapable. Therefore the computers can be used to verify the results obtained by humans, to discovery new results, to - provetheresultsthatahumancanobtainwithoutanytechnology. With respectto our example of computing?, we can mention that recently (in 2002) Y. Kanada, Y. Ushiro, H. Kuroda, and M.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sublimity of Document: Cinema as Diorama is a collection of in-depth, substantive interviews with moving-image artists working "avant-doc, that is, making films that explore the territory between documentary and experimental cinema. The book uses the early history of the museum habitat diorama of animal life, specifically the Hall of African Mammals at the American Museum of Natural History, as a way of rethinking both early and modern cinema document--and especially those recent filmmakers and films that are devoted to providing viewers with panoramic documentations of places and events that otherwise they might never have opportunities to experience in person. This international collection of 27 interviews follows on MacDonald's earlier Avant-Doc: Intersections of Documentary and Avant-Garde Cinema (Oxford, 2015). The interviews, organized panoramically within the collection, are dense with information and insight, and readable by specialists and non-specialists alike. In most instances, these are the most in-depth and expansive-sometimes the first-interviews with these filmmakers. Together, these interviews offer an engaging panorama of the recent history and geography of cinema devoted to documenting the world around us, as well as an in-depth look at the challenges and accomplishments of filmmakers willing to go anywhere on the planet (or on the internet!) to document what they believe we need to see. MacDonald's general introduction provides an overall context for the collection, which includes interviews with Ron Fricke, Gustav Deutsch, Laura Poitras, Fred Wiseman, Nikolaus Geyrhalter, Bill Morrison, Brett Story, Abbas Kiarostami, Lois Patiño, Dominic Gagnon, Erin Espelie, Yance Ford, Janet Biggs, Carlos Adriano, Craig Johnson, Ben Russell, Betzy Bromberg, James Benning, Maxim Pozdorovkin, along with several veterans of Harvard's Sensory Ethnography Lab (and with the executive directors of the distributor, Documentary Educational Resources, which has served the field of independent documentary for nearly fifty years)--each interview is introduced with MacDonald's overview of the interviewee's life and work. The book includes filmographies and selected bibliographies for all the filmmakers.
