Book excerpt: McKees Rocks and Stowe Township, just downriver from the Point of Pittsburgh, contributed significantly to the growth of steel and transportation in western Pennsylvania. In 1888, the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, known as the "Little Giant," built a 100-acre maintenance facility in McKees Rocks, igniting the spark to the region's massive industrial, business, and population explosion. By 1910, the population soared to 15,000, fueled by the rapid influx of nearly 6,000 immigrants. A landmark event in labor history occurred in July 1909, when 5,000 foreign workers, representing 16 different nationalities, waged a long and bloody strike against the Pressed Steel Car Company. McKees Rocks and Stowe Township showcases a region whose diverse history includes the largest Native American mound in Pennsylvania, visits by George Washington, floods, and even Al Capone. Today a rich mix of ethnic cultures still flavors the local neighborhoods, and the accomplishments of homegrown businessmen, musicians, clergy, athletes, public servants, artists, and educators are recognized and respected throughout western Pennsylvania and beyond.

Book excerpt: Located just 14 miles northwest of Philadelphia, Bridgeport is a stone's throw from Valley Forge National Historic Park. Incorporated in 1851, the tiny village of 422 acres had 500 residents living within its boundaries. In 1723, Swedish and Welsh immigrants settled along the Schuylkill River, with the Eastburn and Holstein families among the first to settle. Irish immigrants found work in Bridgeport as early as 1860, and Italian immigrants poured into Bridgeport in the 1890s, finding work in the quarries and along the railroads and canals. Through vintage photographs, Bridgeport celebrates the families and industries that have helped shape this borough.

Book excerpt: Whispering Hope - His Saving Grace: A Book of Inspirational and Spiritual Poetry offers a wonderful healing collection of inspiring and spiritual poems written by Elizabeth Ann Marks. The author was inspired to write this book to help spread the love of God to others. Though she has been writing poetry since the age of ten, after joining a charismatic renewal prayer group, her gift for writing has become spiritual. She was inspired to write for God after being baptized in the Holy Spirit. These poems are elegant and moving. Some are informational about God's intentions for us, His love for us, and some are prayers written from the heart, both praising God and asking for special blessings as well as thanking Him for the blessings He has already bestowed on us. There are special prayers that ask God for healing for others. These prayers have been answered in a very positive way. She says, "Many people have already been inspired by these writings. Some have claimed healing during my reading of certain of these poems at the prayer group. Some have been brought to tears, and still others have told me they hear the words spoken by Christ and not by me." Elizabeth Ann Marks is retired and lives in New Brunswick, Canada. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suzanne Evans finds commonalities between the many images of war mothers - the Canadian Silver Cross mother, the ancient Jewish Maccabean mother of seven martyred sons, the mother of a Palestinian suicide bomber. She compares the lore about mothers of martyrs in the Judeo-Christian, Muslim, and Sikh traditions with stories of World War I Canadian mothers who were depicted in the media as having sacrificed their sons for the sake of civilization, justice, freedom, and God. After the war these mothers were honoured with the Silver Cross medal. Evans argues that, like the mothers of past martyrs, the image of the war-supportive mother in Canada had a powerful influence over public opinion and drew supporters to the cause.

Download Ongoing Conversion: From Good to Better PDF Full Free by Fr. Henry J. Charles and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-01-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of homilies of Fr. Henry Charles composed and delivered over a period of at least twenty years. The homilies were written out and were eventually typed up and it is possible that Fr. Henry had himself thought about publishing them, though we do not know this for sure. While many persons were privileged to receive emailed copies and others actually heard his preaching, the homilies were thought to be deserving of a wider audience. The underlying message of his preaching is that discipleship of Jesus Christ requires not only the grace of faith but also demands perseverance, courage and discipline, critical elements of the process he terms “ongoing conversion.” In addition, Fr. Henry advocates moral excellence, not settling for the merely moderate or the mediocre, but striving always to “be perfect.” Fr. Henry faces up to and wrestles with the “perplexities” of the Gospel and he believed that one of the keys to overcoming these is an appreciation of its many paradoxes and that as a consequence, we are required to see things from a different perspective, not as we are normally inclined to see them, but as God sees them. The homilies have been arranged thematically—On God; On Jesus; What Jesus Calls Us To Be; What Jesus Calls Us To Do; Faith; Hope; Love; Loss, Suffering, Death and Heaven; Virtues and Vices; Human Dignity; Spirituality; Church, Liturgy and Ritual and Culture Society and Leadership. There is of course considerable overlap among the various themes. The subjects he refers to and the examples he gives are contemporary and relevant, not only to a Caribbean audience, but we think to audiences globally. The style is informal and conversational for the most part and this quality of the writing has been maintained. The homilies have been edited for clarity and for obvious errors and omissions in the transcripts, and some have been retitled, but they have otherwise been reproduced and stand as he wrote them.

Book excerpt: You will laugh, cry, and wonder how it was possible. Braddock Heights is a compilation of stories and emotions. The author experienced life as a child and teen unlike most. When he was eight years old, his only friends were hobos and prostitutes. He battled the Catholic school system as a youth and learned on-the-job training in sex education. As a teen, he defied authority, walked the thin line between right and wrong, and challenged nature. Above it all, he loved life. While serving with the U.S. Army in Germany, he won two championships playing basketball, assisted in promoting German-American relations, traveled throughout Europe writing stories for U.S. military newspapers, and befriended a young penniless Mormon who was hitchhiking across Europe. Continuing his love for "the game," Barend, at the age of seventy-three, still competes in basketball in state, national, and international tournaments. In 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011, he was a member of a New York team that won the gold in the New York Empire Games. He is a cancer survivor.

Book excerpt: `A valuable edited volume on a paradigm for peace making which will both inform and enrich academic and policy level debate on the subject, and the particular challenge Sri Lanka now faces of moving from a post-war to a post-conflict Situation.'---Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, Executive Director, Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), Sri Lanka `The essays in this book deserve a wide readership. Together they provide an illuminating examination of the failure of international attempts to craft a liberal peace in Sri Lanka, in the context of analyses of the impacts of neo-liberalism on Sri Lanka's polity, economy and society. Their findings are certainly not happy ones, but they are of great importance for all those who are concerned with peace-building, both in general and in Sri Lanka in particular.---John Harriss, Professor and Director, School for International Studies, Simon Fraser University, Canada Liberal Peace In Question: Politics of State and Market Reform in Sri Lanka uses Sri Lanka's failed attempt at negotiating peace with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to examine the politics of state and market reforms towards liberal peace. Sri Lanka is seen as a critical case that demonstrates key characteristics and shortcomings of liberal peace, vividly demonstrated by internationally facilitated elite negotiations and donor-funded neoliberal development.

Book excerpt: With the breadth and cumulative force of a novel, Mother of Sorrows presents ten interwoven stories of an American family starting out in the post—World War II suburbs of Washington, D.C., a world of identical brick houses and sunstruck, treeless lawns, a world of initial hopefulness from which shame and loss have seemingly been banished. This is the story of two adolescent brothers whose father has suddenly died, and of their beautiful and complicated mother, a mother whom the younger son worshipfully imagines as “Our Mother of the Sighs and Heartaches . . . Our Mother of the Gorgeous Gypsy Earrings . . . Our Mother of the Late Movies and the Cigarettes . . . Our Mother of Sudden Attentiveness . . . Our Mother of Sudden Anger.” This is the brother who narrates these tales as he looks back thirty years later, the only remaining survivor of a world he seeks both to leave behind and to preserve in words forever, a world of sorrow that has held him spellbound even as he has attempted to create a life of his own. Suffused with the beauty of Richard McCann’s extraordinary language, Mother of Sorrows introduces us to a voice that is urgent, contemplative, elegant, angry, revelatory, and like no other in contemporary fiction.
