Book excerpt: The book describes the movement by African American authors from slave narratives and antebellum newspapers into fiction writing, and the subsequent developments of black genre fiction through the present. It analyzes works by modern African American mystery writers, focusing on sleuths, the social locations of crime, victims and offenders, the notion of “doing justice,” and the role of African American cultural vernacular in mystery fiction. A final section focuses on readers and reading, examining African American mystery writers’ access to the marketplace and the issue of the “double audience” raised by earlier writers. Book excerpt: The core of the book revolves around the shifting nature of Ontario’s political landscape. In many ways this is a story of successive governments, ambitious politicians, diligent bureaucrats, and endless library reports straddling the decades. Their aim appears to have been making even better a system that, despite weaknesses, was clearly the best in Canada. Three distinctive trends emerged in Ontario librarianship after the 1930s: first, a growing sense of professionalism in librarianship; second, an enhanced sense of belonging to a pan-Canadian library movement that in 1946 would result in the formation of the Canadian Library Association; and third, a heightened awareness of the competing demands of high culture and popular culture. Public libraries became an important vehicle for promoting community, albeit with competing visions of “space and place,” as Canada generally and Ontario specifically experienced post-World War II immigration and the baby boom. As libraries approached the 21st century, the concerns of digital formats and the all-encompassing Internet intertwined to alter the book-centric "bricks and mortar" world of libraries. Nonetheless, public libraries were well placed to survive this new threat, just as they had with the challenges of radio, television, and telecommunication challenges in the 20th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book attempts to codify important interventions to reorient the present forest management practices in the state of Karnataka in India. It critically looks at the present status of forests and how a resource once plentiful stands degraded and has lost its functional efficiency. There is also a detailed assessment of the threats to forest and wildlife conservation and practical ways to address these challenges. The book argues that optimizing productivity from forests and addressing the underlying livelihood issues of the forest-dependent communities hold the key to an effective forest and wildlife conservation. Further it also evaluates past efforts to regenerate forests, various afforestation schemes and shortlists recommendations for a successful nursery and plantation program. Acknowledging farm forestry as the only practical way to achieve the objective of increasing forest and tree cover to one third of geographical area of the country, the book comes out with a well-defined strategy and action plan for a successful farm-forestry campaign. Recognizing the significance of people’s participation, the book suggests ways to meaningfully involve people in forest and wildlife conservation. Finally, the book anvils a comprehensive action plan and a way forward for holistic and effective management of the forestry sector.
