Book excerpt: "Gender and the Sacred Self in John Donne, one of the first book-length feminist studies of this important metaphysical poet, explores John Donne's contributions to the problems of gendered subjectivity in Tudor and Stuart spiritual culture. It argues that Donne's sacred subject position is ambivalently and illustratively invested in cultural archetypes of mothers, daughters, and brides."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This book was released on 1973-07-31 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alienation, ecstasy, death, rebirth: in the poetry of Michelangelo, Donne, and d' Aubigne these archetypal themes make possible the ultimate formulation of new poetic symbolizations of self and world. As their poetry evolves from a primarily rhetorical towards a fully symbolic mode, images of loss of self (in ecstasy or in alienation), of death and rebirth, recur with increasing frequency and intensity. Whether the context is love poetry or religious poetry, the basic problem remains the same; love is the link between the two kinds of poetry. And love is indeed a problem for these three poets, since it involves the self in relation to the "other," the other being either God or another human being. Increasingly, the work of each poet centers on a need to analyze or abolish the gulf separating subject and object, self and other. The dominant mode of most of the three poets' work is neither rhetorical nor symbolic, but expressive. This transitional mode reveals the individual poet's most urgent concerns and conflicts, his sense of self in Its most isolated or burdensome, affirmative or struggling state. Under lying most of their poems is a profound self-consciousness - a heightened awareness of self as a powerful, separate entity, with a corresponding objectification of all reality outside of self. The Renaissance in general is a time of increasing individualism and 1 self-consciousness.

Book excerpt: 'Donne is perhaps the most intellectual of English poets, and John Carey is perhaps the most intelligent of contemporary English literary critics. The encounter, as one might expect, is fierce and enthralling... This book is sensitive, searching, powerful, exciting, provocative and witty. It is a superb achievement.' Christopher Hill, TLS John Donne: Life, Mind and Art is a unique attempt to see Donne whole. Beginning with an account of his life, it takes as its domain not only the whole range of the poetry, but also the sermons, the letters, the spiritual and controversial works, and such highly personal documents as the treatise on suicide. The result is a clearer picture than has hitherto emerged of one of the most intricate and compelling of literary personalities. 'The one book we have needed all along... A magnificent exercise in reappraisal. I have never read a critical work which reaches as deeply inside the mind of its subject.' Jonathan Raban, Sunday Times 'Carey's book is itself alive with the kind of energy it attributes to Donne.' Christopher Ricks, London Review of Books

Book excerpt: Scientific Discourse in John Donne’s Eschatological Poetry offers a compelling critique of John Donne’s religious and erotic poetry, focusing on the intersection of two seemingly antithetical discourses: the language of the scientific revolution and of Christian eschatology. Throughout its three chapters, which correspond to three scientific disciplines – cartography, physics and alchemy – the volume examines the ways in which the references to early modern and medieval science in Donne’s poetry contribute to conceptualizing the Christian mystery of death.

Book excerpt: "This volume is composed of thirteen essays by an international group of acclaimed Renaissance scholars on the presence of Anne More Donne in the poetry of her husband. In his epitaph for his wife upon her death in 1617, John Donne called her "Faeminae lectissimae, dilectissimaeque" - a woman "most choice" and "most beloved and loving": but these Latin terms of endearment also figured her as a woman both "well-read" and "very well-read." This book aims to endorse and to explore that view of her that is espoused by the poet in his epitaph through readings of his "readings" of her presence and absence as central subjects of Donne's own presentations of himself, his world, and his God."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donne's religious life ... - and the imaginative works that his religion inspired - are among the most troublesome sets of paradoxes and problems to emerge from the English Renaissance. Donne was born into one of the most visible and influential of Catholic families, yet he concluded his life as one of the most visible and influential spokesmen for the Anglican compromise. The author of poems of extraordinary interiority and of prose meditations that betray a pained self-scrutiny, Donne was fascinated by the conversion experiences of Saints Paul and Augustine, but, paradoxically, he left little conclusive evidence by which the modern reader or biographer may chart his spiritual progress. He has, alternately, been accused of guilt-ridden recusancy, condemned for gross political expediency, and lauded for maintaining an extraordinary integrity in a religiously volatile age. Every scholar who believes he has defined Donne's religious life is, ultimately, undone: there is always more.
