Book excerpt: This book is a study of UW men's basketball fans during the 2001-2002 season and explores their proclivity to 'cheering for self' during basketball events. The term 'basketball event' is used rather than 'basketball game' to make clear that everything connected to and seen, heard, or experienced before, during and after a basketball game is included. The actual game itself is only part of the 'basketball event. An undercurrent runs throughout this participant observation mini-ethnography dealing with access, and the relative quality of that access, to basketball events being affected by ones age, class, race, and gender. The prominent role of advertising in shaping basketball events and helping to construct fans as consumers of products (both commercial and institutional) during the process of cheering for self is central to this idea. Cheering for self is the activity engaged in by individual fans after they find things to identify or connect with through personal investment. Fans cheer for self indirectly. Fans cheer for the team that they identify with. Through the process of cheering for self while attending the basketball event people are taught how to become fans, to consume a UW product--the basketball event and to consume advertisers' products. People have a tendency to spend their entire life trying to impress others.

Book excerpt: Most causes of hair loss are manmade. Proper nutrition is one thing. But a lush rain forest is ruined by clear-cutting just as close-cropping the head invites a desert. To add insult to injury biocides (which include many hair products and chlorine) aggravate the environment further by destroying the vital inhabitants thereof. These things cause the scalp to become deserted. In contrast our long haired ancestors had healthy heads of hair because they manipulated nature little. This unique book traces the history of this fact as well as the origins of excessive hair removal during times of religious idolatry. Learn the benefits of longer hair from science, health, Scripture, and history to prevent hair loss and skin cancer; for healthy hair and scalp; to protect your head; and to promote your unique identity. This easy-to-understand book abounds with 100 pictures and other illustrations, handy tables, and is completely referenced. The fight against hair loss will never be won until you understand that the real root causes are self-inflicted or enforced against you by others. Read this book first and get the facts before wasting money on products.

Book excerpt: Superphysics, etc. Superphysics The Practical Kheri-Heb Kheri-Heb Mastery The Book of Amon-Ra Tao te Duat Modern Egyptian Sorcery Hekaurshen In Superphysics you will rediscover the nature of beliefs, how magic works, and the purpose of religion. All 3 embody the very essence of the Egyptian mind. You will also discover what cold light is and the nature of spirits, how to restore life to the seemingly dead, heal people with bioenergy, and the Afterlife. Learn the secret language of Atlantis and its non-mythical heritage, based on memories of Atlanteans recently reincarnated (fulfilling the Edgar Cayce prophecy). Included are several recent Egyptian magic books, plus a book dedicated to the worship of the Egyptian Creator Amon-Ra (added as an example relating to Superphysics). You will learn that prayer is actually a psychic ability, and that through religion people learn how to work it, using mythologies as training wheels of the mind. The ability of Chrono-kinesis, or the ability to influence the future/Time, figures prominently in magic in the form of spells, rituals, and other mental focuses. Numerous experiments were undertaken in the proof of these theories, regardless of ethics. Spirits are indeed real, not fantasy, but modern society is attempting to disprove their existence in the belief of moving forward. This, then, is an archaeological exploration of the supernatural. A good reference for anyone interested in new science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins We call this book on theoretical orientations and methodological strategies in family studies a sourcebook because it details the social and personal roots (i.e., sources) from which these orientations and strategies flow. Thus, an appropriate way to preface this book is to talk first of its roots, its beginnings. In the mid 1980s there emerged in some quarters the sense that it was time for family studies to take stock of itself. A goal was thus set to write a book that, like Janus, would face both backward and forward a book that would give readers both a perspec tive on the past and a map for the future. There were precedents for such a project: The Handbook of Marriage and the Family edited by Harold Christensen and published in 1964; the two Contemporary Theories about theFamily volumes edited by Wesley Burr, Reuben Hill, F. Ivan Nye, and Ira Reiss, published in 1979; and the Handbook of Marriage and the Family edited by Marvin Sussman and Suzanne Steinmetz, then in production.

Book excerpt: Dead White Guys is a timely defense of the great books, arriving in the middle of a national debate about the fate of these books in high schools and universities around the country. Burriesci shows how the great books can enrich our lives as individuals, as citizens, and in our careers. Extending the argument first made by Anna Quinndlen's on the act of reading itself, How Reading Changed My Life," ("It is like the rubbing of two sticks together to make a fire, the act of reading, an improbable pedestrian task that leads to heat and light,) Burriesci reminds us all of the enormous impact reading has on our lives. After his daughter was born prematurely in 2010, Burriesci set out to write a book about 26 Great Books, from Plato to Karl Marx, and how their lessons have applied to his life. As someone who has spent a long and successful career advocating for great literature, Burriesci defends the great books in this series of tender and candid letters, rich in personal experience and full of humor. Matt Burriesci is a national literary leader, serving as Executive Director of both PEN/Faulkner, which bestows the largest peer-juried prize for fiction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA research of Earth-Moon mechanics by astrophysicist Robert Newton leads mathematicians of MSU to a breakthrough in the chronology and history of Great Britain. The Issue With British History is the most explosive tractate on history ever written. Every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. It shows that British history is, in fact, much shorter than is generally presumed; at the same time the author stresses the major role of the Great Britain in the world history. The book contains irrefutable evidence of mathematical, logical, statistical, and astronomical nature that British history of 640 - 1040 A.D. and Byzantine history of 378 - 830 A.D. are reflections of the same late-Medieval original. This translant came to England from Venice. Feel free to use this book in your eventual discussions with the avid devotees of "classical" chronology.
