Book excerpt: While everyone is hypnotized by the dystopian siren song of Covid-19, the main eschatological threats to the future of humanity and the planet haven't disappeared. Climate crisis, nuclear age and now pandemics – these have become our 'new normal' and we must prepare ourselves for what comes after. In this post-apocalyptic rollercoaster ride through the world after the Apocalypse, philosopher Srećko Horvat invites us to explore the Apocalypse understood as 'revelation' (not the 'end' itself) and argues that the only way to prevent the end - namely, extinction - is to engage in a close reading of various interconnected threats like climate crisis, nuclear age and the ongoing pandemic. Drawing on the work of the neglected philosopher Günther Anders, this book outlines a philosophical approach to deal with what Horvat, borrowing a term from climate science and giving it a theological twist, calls 'eschatological tipping points'. It is no longer just the nuclear age or climate crisis, it is the collision of the nuclear age and climate crisis conjoined with various other major threats (pandemics, but also the viruses of capitalism and fascism). By investigating the future of places such as Chernobyl, the Mediterranean and Marshall Islands, including many places that were affected by Covid-19, the 'revelation' according to Horvat appears simple and unprecedented: the alternative is no longer socialism or barbarism, our only choice today is a radical re-invention of the world or mass extinction. After the Apocalypse is an urgent call not only to mourn tomorrow's dead today but to struggle for our future while we can.

Book excerpt: The soul is so closely connected to life that one cannot think that it could ever be separated from life and, consequently, be mortal. Therefore, it can only be immortal. This argument from Plato's Phaedo for the immortality of the soul exhibits both a great strength and a great weakness. Its strength is that it is dif ficult for anyone to think that the soul could ever exist without life. Its weakness is, first, that not all religions accept a soul that remains the same as the center of the person - thus one speaks, for instance, in Buddhism of a "soulless theory of the human being" - and, second, that what is true does not depend on what we can think, but on what we recognize in experience and thought. The religions believe in the existence of a power that can work contrary to our experience that the soul in death is not separated from life. How the reli gions believe they can establish this continued life after death and how faith in this life is related in the religions to the interpretation of history, its progress, its apocalyptic end, and its eschatological completion and transfiguration is the theme of this book. In the culture of the West in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, faith in the secular progress of the technological control of nature and the economic or ganization of society was the enemy of faith in the immortality of the soul.

Book excerpt: The purpose of U.S. foreign policy has, at least theoretically, been to keep Americans safe. As we confront a radically changed world, it has become indisputably clear that the terms of that policy have failed. Washington's insistence that a market economy is compatible with the common good, its faith in the idea of the "West" and its "special relationships," its conviction that global military primacy is the key to a stable and sustainable world order-- these have brought endless wars and a succession of moral and material disasters. Bacevich lays down a new approach, based on moral pragmatism, mutual coexistence, and war as a last resort. His vision calls for nothing less than a profound overhaul of our understanding of national security. -- adapted from back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional apocalyptic texts concern the advent of a better world at the end of history that will make sense of everything that happened before. But what is at stake in the contemporary shift to apocalyptic narratives in which the utopian end of time is removed? The Contemporary Post-Apocalyptic Novel offers an innovative critical model for our cultural obsession with 'the end' by focussing on the significance of time in the 21st-century post-apocalyptic novel and challenging traditional apocalyptic logic. Once confined to the genre of science fiction, the increasing popularity of end-of-the-world narratives has caused apocalyptic writing to feature in the work of some of contemporary literature's most well-known fiction writers. Considering novels by Will Self, Cormac McCarthy, David Mitchell, Emily St. John Mandel, Jeanette Winterson and others, Diletta De Cristofaro frames the contemporary apocalyptic imagination as a critique of modernity's apocalyptic conception of time and history. Interdisciplinary in scope, the book historicises apocalyptic beliefs by exploring how relentlessly they have shaped the modern world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ambitious and radically original reading of philosopher Francis Bacon. Comprehensive in its ambitions and meticulous in its approach, The Political Philosophy of Francis Bacon is a new and unique interpretation of one of early modernity’s more important thinkers. Whereas recent works on Bacon tend to confine themselves either to interpreting his historical context or to considering the founder of Baconianism from the perspective of one work in particular or the history of science in general, Tom van Malssen argues, through detailed and provocative interpretations of a number of Baconian writings, that the unity of Bacon’s thought can only be revealed if these writings are read in historical and philosophical conjunction as well as on the assumption that they are all somehow part of the whole of Bacon’s political philosophy. In addition to restoring Bacon to the pantheon of great philosophers, van Malssen demonstrates that a proper understanding of Bacon’s political philosophy contributes significantly to our understanding of the nature of philanthropic science, the modern project, and ultimately ourselves. “This book will become an enduring pillar of our understanding of Bacon’s philosophy. The scholarship and mastery of the historical sources, both philosophic and Biblical, are brilliant.” — Jerry Weinberger, author of Science, Faith, and Politics: Francis Bacon and the Utopian Roots of the Modern Age: A Commentary on Bacon’s Advancement of Learning “The scholarship of Bacon in this book is masterful. It should transform and deepen the field, the ‘field’ being the nature and history of the philosophic life. This is arguably the most thoughtful, penetrating, and ultimately revealing book on Bacon ever written.” — Svetozar Minkov, author of Francis Bacon’s “Inquiry Touching Human Nature”: Virtue, Philosophy, and the Relief of Man’s Estate

Book excerpt: In this study of the cultural pursuit of the end and what follows, Berger contends that every apocalyptic depiction leaves something behind, some mixture of paradise and wasteland. Combining literary, psychoanalytic, and historical methods, Berger mines these depictions for their weight and influence on current culture. He applies wide-ranging evidence--from science fiction to Holocaust literature, from Thomas Pynchon to talk shows, from American politics to the fiction of Toni Morrison--to reveal how representations of apocalyptic endings are indelibly marked by catastrophic histories.
