Book excerpt: Advances in Morphogenesis, Volume 10, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in morphogenesis. The book contains six chapters and opens with a discussion of the "organization center" of the amphibian embryo. This is followed by separate chapters on physiological gradients in development; molecular embryology of the sea urchin, mollusks, and other invertebrates; and changes in DNA, RNA, and protein during successive phases of embryonic development in vertebrates. Subsequent chapters deal with the control of growth in the filamentous prothalli and the causal factors promoting the transition to the two-dimensional gametophyte; and the development, inheritance, and origin of the plastid in Euglena.

Book excerpt: Advances in Morphogenesis, Volume 9, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in morphogenesis. The book contains seven chapters and begins with a study of the interactions that occur in the morphogenesis of higher plants. This is followed by separate chapters on the regulatory mechanisms and cellular interactions in the development of annelids and mollusks; morphogenetic factors in limb ontogeny and limb regeneration; primary induction in birds; and the organogenesis and arrangement of cutaneous appendages in birds. Subsequent chapters deal with avian gastrulation and macromolecular syntheses and nucleocytoplasmic interactions in early development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the continuing progress of research in the fields of cellular and molecular biology, which has oriented many embryologists towards molecular biology, no concrete explanation of morphogenesis has yet been found. The present state of knowledge of heart development is characterized by an enormous discrepancy between the qualitative descriptions of what happens on the organ level and the more or less quantitative information on subcellular and molecular events. It is generally not understood how cells form tissues and how tissues generate particular forms of an organ. In an attempt to fill the gaps we systematically studied in the period 1968 to 1973 one of the general but rather neglected morphogenetic mechanisms which integrates cells into tissues and organs-cell death. Only a small part of our research on cell death in the development of chick, rat and human embryo hearts has as yet been published in extenso. Most of it has been communicated in papers delivered at different scientific meetings. We would like to use the opportunity offered by Advances to present a syn thesis and integrative review of our results. In this way the actual period of discovery of the existence of cell death and of its morphogenetic role in the heart development come to an end. This opens up the next phase of our research which consists in studies of how cell death is integrated with other morphogenetic mechanisms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pattern Formation in Morphogenesis is a rich source of interesting and challenging mathematical problems. The volume aims at showing how a combination of new discoveries in developmental biology and associated modelling and computational techniques has stimulated or may stimulate relevant advances in the field. Finally it aims at facilitating the process of unfolding a mutual recognition between Biologists and Mathematicians of their complementary skills, to the point where the resulting synergy generates new and novel discoveries. It offers an interdisciplinary interaction space between biologists from embryology, genetics and molecular biology who present their own work in the perspective of the advancement of their specific fields, and mathematicians who propose solutions based on the knowledge grasped from biologists.

Book excerpt: Vascular Morphogenesis: Methods and Protocols provides a range of techniques for studying vascular morphogenesis in vivo and in vitro, reflecting advances in the field. Endothelial cell signaling is currently believed to promote fundamental cues for cell fate specification, embryo patterning, organ differentiation and postnatal tissue remodeling. Understanding the concept of vascular bed specificity represents a major challenge for future investigations. Indeed, one of the most interesting theoretical perspectives and practical applications of endothelial cell signaling is the possibility for these cells to maintain their inductive potential during adult life. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Practical and authoritative, Vascular Morphogenesis: Methods and Protocols will serve as a instructive and useful reference for cell biologists, anatomists, pathologists and physiologists, as well as all those interested in this area of biological study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern genetics began in 1900 with the rediscovery of Mendel's paper, and now the sequencing of the human genome has brought the first century of progress in this field to a triumphant conclusion. Genetics has entered a new era with the advent of genomic and proteomic approaches, and the knowledge in no other biological discipline is advancing as rapidly as that in molecular genetics and cell biology. Proliferation of new terms inevitably accompanies such exponential growth. The sixth edition of A Dictionary of Genetics addresses the need of students and professionals to have access to an up-to-date reference source that defines not only the most recently coined terms, but in many cases also presents important ancillary encyclopedic information.A Dictionary of Genetics has a broader coverage than its name implies, since it includes definitions of strictly genetic words along with a variety of non-genetic terms often encountered in the literature of genetics. There are about 7,000 definitions, and tables or drawings that illustrate 395 of these. In addition to the main body of the dictionary, this work features new Appendices covering the genomic sizes and gene numbers of about 30 organisms ranging from the smallest known virus to humans, an up-to-date listing of internet addresses for easy access to genetic databanks, and a list of developments, inventions and advances in genetics, cytology, and evolutionary science from the past 400 years. These 900 entries, covering a period from 1590 to 2001, are also cross-referenced in the definitions that occur in the body of the dictionary. No other genetics dictionary supplies definitions cross-referenced to chronology entries or has species entries cross-referenced to an appendix showing the position of each organism in a taxonomic hierarchy. These features make A Dictionary of Genetics the most important lexicon in this field.
